The family story

Three Douglas generations on Union Passage, 74 years and counting.

The Silver Shop opened in 1952 on a Georgian lane Jane Austen had already called “this interesting passageway” in Northanger Abbey. Guy Douglas first set foot in the shop aged nine, looking for hand-painted yellow bears for his mother; he came back in his twenties to help his parents Alastair and Diane “for six months”. Six months became 25 years. Guy took over from his parents in 2013 and runs the shop with his wife Hannah today. Three generations, same address, same workshop bench at the back where the engraving and soldering happen.

“Nothing brings me more pleasure than people leaving our shop happier than when they came in, hopefully with something shiny in their hand.” Guy Douglas · Welcome to Bath, Indie Heroes 2024

The workshop bench

Engraving and soldering, while you walk to the Abbey.

The workshop sits at the back of the shop. Walk in with a broken chain, a christening cup, a hipflask, a signet ring; the bench will quote in person before any work starts. Most jobs same-day, larger pieces 48 hours. The same bench has been here since 1952 and the same disciplines apply: solid 925 sterling, hand-cut lettering on solid pieces, machine engraving for finer plate, soldering at the correct flux temperature so the polish takes evenly.

Engraving
Hand and machine, on silver, silver-plate, pewter. Calibrated for depth so the lettering survives polishing.
Soldering
Broken chains, charm jump-rings, clasp replacements, stone re-settings. Walk-in, no booking required.
